Members and guests are invited to join us for a special presentation, “A Tremendous Stir: Theft, Privilege, and the Death of a Harvard Secret Society” presented by HCV member Dr. Larry Vincent on Thursday the 27th of February.
Be among the first to learn the fascinating, and until recently buried history of the notorious Harvard secret society known as the Med. Fac. Larry has spent years digging deep into the Harvard Archives to assemble a compelling account of Gilded Age collegiate crime and bad behavior. Over a hundred years after the fact, relying on previously sealed and still unpublished documents, he reopens the door to an era when felonious conspiracy at the nation’s most ancient university could be overlooked as a youthful peccadillo—so long as the perpetrators were privileged by ancestry, wealth, and social status.
L.M. Vincent (’73) was a literary editor of the Harvard Lampoon while an undergraduate at Harvard, and a former member of the Harvard Medical School faculty. A radiologist and ultrasound specialist, he has authored numerous medical articles as well as non-fiction and four novels, and his plays have been produced regionally and off-off-Broadway. “Competing With the Sylph,” one of the first books to explore eating disorders and menstrual dysfunction in elite female athletes and cited in over 130 scientific publications, established him as a pioneer in dance medicine. His quasi-comic history of a small place, the famed red Rockport fish shack—"In Search of Motif No. 1”—was chosen a “MUST READ” and a finalist for Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year (2011) by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. “A Tremendous Stir” is his eighth book. Larry is a former member of the Kansas City Ballet company and is married to the former Martha Graham dancer Sharon Tyers. They have two grown daughters, both living in Melbourne and affiliated with Deakin University and the University of Melbourne.
