Returning Harvard Chair of Australian Studies: LECTURE AND DINNER with Dr Chris McAuliffe

April 18, 2013 6:00 pm - Lecture, 7:30 pm - Dinner

The Harvard Club of Victoria is delighted to invite you and your guests to a public lecture followed by a private dinner with Dr Chris McAuliffe, the returning Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard.

Dr Chris McAuliffe, Director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne from 2000 to 2013 and the 2011/12 Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard, will be giving the 2013 Returning Harvard Chair of Australian Studies Lecture on April 18th. The lecture is hosted by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, and will be followed by a private dinner for the former holders of the Chair of Australian Studies, the Ian Potter Museum of Art, and members of the Harvard Club (and their guests). The title of Dr McAuliffe’s public lecture is The game of nationhood: Art, sport and politics in the Federation era. In an exploration of art works from the Federation era, the lecture will reveal the surprising role that art and sport played in shaping ideas about Australian nationhood in the late nineteenth century.

At the dinner, Professor McAuliffe will speak about his personal experience at Harvard. We will also hear from Ricky Campbell-Allen, the 2009/2010 Menzies scholar. After completing her Masters of Education in Public Policy at Harvard and working in the Boston public school system, Ms Campbell-Allen has returned to Australia to take up the position of Director the Centre for New Public Education at the Foundation for Young Australians. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, Professor Glyn Davis and the Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Harvard Chair of Australian Studies, Professor Stuart Macintyre, also will be attending.
