Sleep Deprivation and Safety
Supper and lecture with Dr. Laura K. Barger, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital
The Harvard Club of Victoria invites you to attend a supper and lecture with Dr Laura K Barger, co-founder of the Harvard Work Hours Health and Safety Group, which assesses the impact of extended work hours on the health and safety of workers and the public. Dr. Barger has developed interventions that reduce fatigue and medical errors among hospital residents. In addition, she has created large scale occupational fatigue management and sleep disorders screening programs in occupational groups that work non-standard hours, such as police officers, firefighters, mission controllers, railroad workers, and federal air marshals.
In this presentation, Dr Barger will describe the mechanisms linking sleep and performance, the extent of the risks posed by inadequate sleep, and the steps that can be taken to detect sleep-related performance risks and to improve the quality of sleep.
Dr Barger is visiting Monash University for two months as a Harvard Club of Australia Fellow
