HCV Wine Tasting Event

Join us for an evening of socialising and wine tasting! Held on Thursday the 29th of April, HCV members and guests will have the opportunity to hear from our very own wine maker, past HCV President Robert Utter and his son Adrian.

Adrian and Robert Utter, run Riverhouse Wine and Truffles, a mixed enterprise farm at Buxton, Victoria , set in the beautiful Acheron River Valley, 100 kms northeast of Melbourne in the Dividing Range. The property now has a small vineyard of approx. 3 acres, producing 400-500 dozen wine annually, a 350-tree productive truffiere, and runs beef cattle breeding herd, all of which are managed hands-on by Adrian and Robert.

Adrian is a professional agronomist with over twenty years’ experience in viticulture and horticulture. His experience has been with Yering Station, Coldstream Hills, Devaux in Champagne, and for the last fifteen years with leading agricultural supplier, E E Muir & Sons. Adrian is the National Viticulture Lead for Muirs.

Robert (A.B., ’72) is Past President of the Harvard Club of Victoria and retired in 2017 from global financial exchange operator and financial data provider, Intercontinental Exchange. He has enjoyed 50 years association with the property at Buxton.

Trial plantings of grapes were initiated by Adrian in 2000, followed by many harvests and experimentation with winemaking on a gradually increasing scale. Two varieties were selected for commercial planting in 2012: Pinot Noir and Riesling, followed by Shiraz in 2015.  The first commercial vintage under the Utter label was the 2015 Pinot Noir; current releases are 2019 Pinot Noir, 2019 Syrah, and 2020 Riesling.

In our tasting event, we will present current releases and some contrasting vintages from previous years, along with samples of the current, just-finished fermentation to illustrate the transformative process that the grape undergoes on its journey to become fine wine.

Light refreshments will be served. Event will be limited in numbers, so register early.
