This event is free of charge.

                                                                                    Money Demystified

Back in his hometown, New York-based economist and central bank watcher, Paul Sheard, will speak to his Wall Street Journal best-selling book The Power of Money. Paul will explain why, after spending a quarter of a century as a financial markets economist in Japan and the United States, he felt moved to write a book about money.

Be prepared to have many of your preconceptions about money, monetary policy, and government deficits and debt challenged. Paul had a front-row seat at both the birth of QE (quantitative easing) in Japan in March 2001 and when the global financial system nearly came crashing down in September 2008; he'll share his insights on both. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with one of the world's leading economic commentators and hear his take on the hot Australian economic issues of the day.

About The Speaker

Dr. Paul Sheard, a noted Australian American economist and policy-watcher based in New York, is the author of the Wall Street Journal bestselling business book, The Power of Money: How Governments and Banks Create Money and Help Us All Prosper (Matt Holt Books). Known for his ability to see the forest and the trees and for his willingness to challenge the conventional wisdom, Sheard cut his teeth as a markets economist in Tokyo covering Japan’s “lost decades” and then, as global chief economist of Lehman Brothers in New York, he had a front-row seat at the global financial crisis.

Most recently Research Fellow and M-RCBG Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and before that Vice Chairman of S&P Global, Sheard held global chief economist positions at Standard & Poor’s Rating Services and Nomura Securities, faculty positions at Osaka University and the Australian National University, and visiting positions at Stanford University and the Bank of Japan. He has been a member of several World Economic Forum expert councils and was appointed by two prime ministers to serve on advisory committees of the Japanese Government. An expert on Japanese corporate governance, he was a non-executive director of the major Japanese financial services company, ORIX Corporation. A member of the Bretton Woods Committee, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York, and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, Sheard sits on the board of the Foreign Policy Association and on the advisory board of the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College.

Sheard’s 1997 book in Japanese, The Crisis of Main Bank Capitalism, won the prestigious Suntory-Gakugei Prize, and was followed in 2000 by another book in Japanese, Mega Corporate Restructuring. Sheard has a Master of Economics and PhD from the ANU, and an honorary Doctor of Laws from his alma mater, Monash University.
