Harvard and John Andrews: A Special Evening
John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense
Wednesday, 28 August 2024, 6:00pm
Dulux Gallery, Glyn Davis Building (MSD), University of Melbourne
Please join curator Kevin Liu (M.Design Studies, Harvard) and Professor Paul Walker on Wednesday 28 August 2024 at 6pm for an exclusive tour for Harvard graduates of the exhibition, John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense, currently on show at the Dulux Gallery on the ground floor of the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne.
John Andrews (M.Arch, Harvard, 1958) designed Gund Hall, the Graduate School of Design (GSD) building at Harvard University, which was completed in 1972. His controversial building is a key component of the exhibition, John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense, which is a celebration of the great, yet under-recognised, architect's work and its global impact. Today, Andrews’ designs are prophetic examples of how architecture can be used to address urgent environmental and urban concerns.
Toured previously at Harvard University’s Druker Design Gallery, John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense showcases previously inaccessible Australian archival holdings from the State Library of New South Wales, with a special focus on Andrews' Melbourne projects including the RMIT library and student union, the Melbourne Convention Centre, a scheme for the renovation of Flinders Street Station, and a project for medium density housing at Southbank.
We will also be joined on this special evening by Professor Philip Goad, Chair of Architecture at The University of Melbourne, and Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard from 2019-2020.
After the tour, for anyone interested, you are invited to join Kevin, Paul and Philip for an informal dinner in Carlton (at your own cost). Please select the dinner and exhibition option when noting your RSVP if you would like to attend this component.
